The one year grant given by Kaiser Permanente for the Douglas County School District is supposed to help students balance the long hours of sitting and studying with some physical education. The Douglas County School District Healthy Schools team is currently working with eight pilot schools to include fitness classes in their school week, have classroom physical activity kits to play with during class and to help teachers with professional development in including physical exercise in their day to day lives.
The idea is to introduce physical activity before, during and after the school day. With the grant, schools were able to purchase physical activity bags for their classrooms which include activity suggestions, juggling scarves, beanbags and many more items. Teacher have reported a ton of improvement in their students’ behavior, even though the physical activity is limited to two to three minutes, three times a day.
