The Colorado Supreme Court has ruled against Douglas County School District’s Choice Scholarship Program. The reason for this ruling: according to the court, the state is not allowed to use public money to fund religious schools. And that is exactly what the plaintiffs, Taxpayers for Public Education, claim Douglas County did.
District leaders plan to take the case to the US Supreme Court. They blame the Blaine Amendments for the negative ruling, because they are reflecting a very ugly period of American history and need to be updated. They are positive that the case will be taken up by the US Supreme Court considering the Colorado court ruling was only barely in favor of the plaintiffs with a vote of 4-3.
The plaintiffs, on the other hand, do not think the case will make it to the US Supreme Court and are happy with the Colorado court’s decision.
